Item Description
Condition: Mint never hingedGrade: Ungraded
ATTENTION: PLATE NUMBER COLLECTORS!Here is your chance to get a unique item, a premium Scott #723 coil line pair with part of the plate number showing. It takes a unique set of circumstances for this to happen. These stamps were printed on rotary plates with multiple plates on the rotary printer. Where the plates met, a colored ink line was printed between the stamps, creating a line pair. Because line pairs occur in only a small percentage of the pairs, they carry a premium catalog value compared to a regular coil pair. Next to the end of the plates where the line would occur would be the plate number, similar to the number on a plate block. Normally this number is not visible when the coil's straight edges are cut. However, if the coil is mis-cut, some of this plate number would appear. So to get a visible plate number, you must have both a mis-cut stamp and one on of the small percentage of stamps that feature the line pair. This particular issue is Scott #723, the premium 6c Garfield issue of 1932. The plate number is either 20968 or 20969, identified using the Durland Standard Plate Number Catalog. Scott Catalog value for the never hinged line pair without any premium for the plate number is $82.50!A final note: In order for the plate number to be visible, the pair must be significantly mis-cut, so centering by necessity will be be significantly off-centered. Line pairs with visible plate numbers are often considered EFO issues, Errors, Freaks or Oddities because of the significant mis-cutting. They can't be graded in the normal way of F, F/VF, VF, etc. All line pairs offered are listed as ungraded and imaged so the buyer can identify the plate number and see the level of the mis-cut.
