Item Description
Back in 1998 (when ICELAND was still issuing postage stamps!) Iceland Post issued this artistic souvenir sheet depicting three antique Agricultural Tools on a souvenir sheet with three different values, observing the annual 'Day of the Stamp' celebration in Iceland.The 35 Kr single depicts turf-cutting scythes that were invaluable in cutting the turf that was used as roofs on many early dwellings in Iceland. Shown on the 65 Kr single is a horse-drawn Hay Mower of the type first imported by Iceland in the 1850s. The 100 Kr stamp features a drawing of the prize of many farmers - a Manure Mincer (!!) used to make it easier to spread manure on gardens and fields!
The handcolored cachet features the Puffin Cachets mascot happily riding his Hay Mower, apparently oblivious to the fact that he has forgotten to hitch it up to a team of horses!
The cover bears three nice strikes of the official pictorial First Day of Issue cancel of Sept. 10, 1998 that depicts the Turf House Museum at Skogar.
The reverse bears the PUFFIN CACHETS logo and shows that this is cover #1 of only 9 serviced!
