Pelican Island, off the coast of Florida, was celebrated in 2003 on the centennial anniversary of its creation by order of then-president Theodore Roosevelt. In those 100 years, the national Wildlife Refuge System grew to include 570 ecological 'safe zones' for wildlife -- with at least one refuge in all 50 states!This cachet - produced in limited numbers - shows a pelican dignitary on Pelican Island welcoming a family of pelicans, while the image of Teddy Roosevelt grins from an 'Our Founder' sign in the background.
The 37¢ Pelican Island single received the official FDoI pictorial cancel of March 14, 2003 in Sebastian, Florida, showing Canada Geese in flight.
