Puffins love riding Killer Whales - as seen in this cachet - as long as they've got a good polka-dotted inner tube securely wrapped around their waist!The island nation of The Faroes actually has more opportunities for whale-watching than whale-riding, surrounded, as it is, by the deep waters of the North Sea where more than seven species of Marine Mammals live.
In 1998, as part of the observance of the International Year of the Ocean, The Faroes issued four attractive stamps showing 4 of the whale species in the surrounding waters. Depicted were the White-Sided Dolphin, the Killer Whale, the Bottlenose Dolphin, and the Beluga Whale.
This cover bears a block of 4 of the KILLER WHALE stamp, tied by one of two nice cancels of the official pictorial First Day of Issue from the capital of Torshavn on May 18, 1998. The cachet is handcolored and includes a rendering of the logo of the International Year of the Ocean.
The cover is handmade from granite index stock (which is much less blue than the scanner made it look!)
The reverse shows that this is cover #1 of only 4 covers with blocks of 4 sent to the Faroes for canceling!
