Item Description
Before the formation of the Iceland Steamship Company in 1914, postal communications with the rest of the world were largely in the hands of foreign ship operators. But from 1914 on, Iceland had the resources to purchase or build ships of their own to carry the mails beyond their shores. Four of those ships (SS Laura, MS Dronning Alexandrine, MS Laxfoss and MS Godafoss III ) are portrayed beautifully in this 1995 set designed by Iceland's premiere stamp designer, Þröstur Magnússon.The handcolored cachet features our puffin mascot as an Admiral sitting atop a mail bag in his miniature póstskip (mail ship) scanning the way ahead with his telescope! The cover has two clear strikes of the June 20, 1995 pictorial First Day of Issue hand cancel that pictures an anchor.
The reverse shows this to be cover #3 of only 12 covers that were sent to Iceland for servicing.
