Item Description
This cover commemorated 75 years of service by the Nickel Plate Railroad. Their first train ran between Arcadia and McComb, Ohio on July 4, 1881. This cover was postmarked at Arcadia, Ohio, July 4, 1956. Although addressed to Lynn in east central Indiana, the cover was sent to Hymera, Indiana, about 140 miles to the west. A magenta MISSENT TO...... marking and a HYMERA, IND. marking were applied to the cover. From the William Henry Smith Memorial Library of the Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis:
“In 1880 a survey was made from St. Louis to Fort Wayne, Indiana, to connect with the Lake Erie & Western Railroad. The survey was purchased by a group of men known as the Seney Syndicate and two additional surveys were made. One from Chicago to Fort Wayne, the other from Fort Wayne to Cleveland, which was originally intended as the eastern terminus of the New York, Chicago & St. Louis, which adopted the nickname Nickel Plate Road.
“Early in April 1881, Major Henry L. Merill, an experienced railroad builder, assumed charge of construction. The first rails for the NPR were laid between Arcadia and McComb, Ohio, and the first train was run over the road 22 October 1882. The Lake Shore & Michigan Southern, later a part of the New York Central System, quickly realized the value of the NPR as a competitor and purchased the road and held controlling interest in it until July 1916.”
This cover has a noticeable crease in the upper right-hand corner and minor creasing at the lower right-hand corner and top center.

- Shipping Instructions
- About 3½ years ago, I stopped selling and shipping outside the US due to new postal rules and rapidly rising costs. The USPS is raising postal rates again in January 2019. Today, December 25, 2018, due to the continuing rise in the cost of postage and associated fees, I am reluctantly raising my general shipping fee for the first time in many years. My sales here at HipStamp involve no additional charge for the purchase of multiple stamps. Shipping is via USPS unless otherwise specified. Be sure to contact me before making your purchases if you have questions.
