The 2018 edition of the Scott _Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue_ celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Scott catalogs. The title pages of this volume and other volumes in the 2018 Scott Standard catalog state that this is the 174th edition of the catalogs (and it is). In September 1868, John Walter Scott published his first stamp catalog. The catalog, titled _A Descriptive Catalogue of America and Foreign Postage Stamps, Issued from 1840 to Date_, is considered to be the first Scott stamp catalog.
The Scott catalog has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a 24-page bound pamphlet. The Scott Standard catalog lists more than 700,000 stamps from more than 600 stamp-issuing entities. Because the catalog volumes had grown so large that they were literally bursting at the seams, each 2018 Scott Standard catalog has been split into two volumes, A and B.
All told, almost 9,000 value changes are recorded in the combined Volumes 4A and 4B of the 2018 Scott _Standard Postage Stamp Catalogue_.
VOL. 4A
Values for imperforate stamps have been added to the footnotes for modern issues of Jamaica. Among the more than 1,300 value changes for this Caribbean nation are a few increases for stamps of the classic era, prior to the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. The trend is downward for values of stamps issued from the beginning of the 1950s through the 1990s.
Little activity is seen among the issues of Japan, but a review of the listings resulted in more than 200 value changes, mostly among regular-issue stamps from 1871 to 1950 and back-of-the-book stamps. The market for stamps of Japan has softened in recent years because of the weak yen, but most stamps have held their own in value.
The overprints listed as Jordan Scott 1-83 are now expanded into separate sets of major numbers and minor numbers for stamps that are perforated gauge 15 by 14 and those that are perforated gauge 14. Where different overprint types are known, the types are now listed and illustrated.
VOL. 4B
Scattered value changes occur among the listings for stamps of Mexico. Among the provisional stamps issued for the city of Guadalajara, the 1867 un real black on gray blue paper with serrate perforations (Scott 10) skyrockets from $400 used to $900. The value is in italics to indicate that this stamp trades infrequently and is difficult to value. Numerous counterfeits exist of the stamps of Guadalajara.
Value changes for classic and modern issues of Macau reflect mostly increases. The surcharged 1902 6-avos-on-10-rupee red violet (Scott 120) jumps from $40 unused to $60.
The Montenegro 1894-98 set of overprinted Prince Nicholas I stamps (Scott 32-44) has been expanded to include new listings for stamps perforated gauge 11½ with small holes and perforated gauge 11½ with large holes. Similar reorganizations are made for Scott 45-56. The perforation varieties for Montenegro’s first postage due stamps (Scott J1-J8) also have been broken out into new minor listings.
