Nepal 1777/99 King Rana Bahadur Shaw Royal Seal Stampless Cover 1777/99, King Rana Bahadur Shaw, Royal Seal of Nepal, choice strike on cover, in bright red, the Devanagri script of the seal reading "Shreed Nathasya Nayab shree 5 Maharje Rana Bahadoor Sama Sher Jung," addressed in Persian, it being the court language of many Asian countries at this time, some typical flaws as expected, but a quality example of this rare strike. King Rana reigned until 1799, when he abdicated in favour of his infant son, Girvan Yuddha Bikram Shah, with Raj Rajeshwari Devi, Rana's first wife, serving as Regent. Rana turned to an ascetic life, which he soon renounced upon the death of his favourite wife, Kantavati Jha, and, in attempting to re-assert his royal authority, sparked a threat of civil war. Unable to re-establish his control, he fled to the British-controlled city of Varanasi in 1800.
