Item Description

The stamp in this listing is a stamp issued for the German colony of the Mariana Islands (Marianen in German) in 1900. The stamp was cancelled at the main (and only) post office in the Marianas at Saipan, on 11 November 1911.

The Marianas colony is located in the western Pacific, and consists of an island chain extending north from just north of the island of Guam, which was a US territory since 1899. Colonized by the Spanish as part of the "Eastern Philippines" in the 1500's, the Spanish did not maintain a large presence here. When the Philippines and Guam were lost to the US in 1898, Spain sold the rest of their Pacific possessions to Germany in 1899. The Marianas, being cut off from the Caroline Islands by the cession of Guam to the US were made their own colony. It was one of the smallest of German's colonial possessions. The total population of about 2000 people at the time included 3 Germans for a number of years--the colonial governor, his lieutenant, and the postmaster. (!).

This means that if you choose to forgo insurance, you agree to release me from any future claim via paypal if it should be lost in the mail.

Payment Options:

Paypal, Money Orders, and Checks payable in the US are accepted. Credit cards accepted through paypal only. Checks must be drawn on a US bank, or I cannot cash them! (I can no longer accept Canadian Postal Money Orders, even those in US dollars-sorry!)

Return Policy:

US Bidders: 14 days from the 3rd day after the item is sent.

International: 14 days from the 7th day after the item is sent.
