The "Sigma 7" space capsule with astronaut Wally Schirra aboard was launched on 5/16/1963 from Cape Canaveral, FL at 8:15 AM. Astronaut Schirra orbited the earth 6 times and was weightless for over 9 hours during the flight. He was the 3rd US astronaut to orbit the earth. The capsule splashed down in the Pacific Ocean about 5:30 PM on 5/16/1963 and was recovered by helos from the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge (CVS-33). This cover has a hand stamp cachet from the USS John A. Bole ( DD-755) and cancelled on board the Bole - Recovery Ship for the Pacific. The cover has a catalog value of $25.
