Launch of MA-8 Astronaut Walter M.Schirra 6 orbits around the Earth October 3, 1962 This cover commemorates the Launch, splashdown and Recovery of the MA-8 space flight, The "Sigma 7" space capsule, with astronaut Walter M. (Wally) Schirra, Jr. aboard. It was launched on 10/03/1962 from Cape Canaveral, FL at 8:15 AM, and Astronaut Schirra orbited the earth 6 times, and was weightless for over 9 hours during the flight. He was the 3rd US astronaut to orbit the earth. The capsule splashed down in the Pacific Ocean about 5:30 PM and was recovered by helos from the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge (CVS-33). The cover was produced by Artcraft, unaddressed with hand cancel.
