Item Description

The stamp in this listing is a stamp issued for use in the German “Treaty Port” post offices in China. This stamp is listed in Scott as #A8 (Mi M 2 II) and has a cancel from the post office in located at Tsingtau in the German colony of Kiautschou, and appears to be dated 17 September 1901, which is a fairly late usage for German Offices in China stamps to be used in Kiautschou.

Although the stamp appears to be a German Offices in China stamp, this stamp is actually a “forerunner” for Kiautschou, (sometimes spelled Kiauchau in English). This territory was a German colony / protectorate from 1897 until World War I, when it was taken over by the Japanese in November of 1914. Called the “German Hong Kong”, it did issue stamps of the German colonial “Kaiser’s Yacht” definitive series starting in 1901--but used ordinary German Offices in China stamps until then. These are distinguishable only by their cancels as in this case.

This stamp was actually used in September of 1901, several months after this denomination was replaced by a 3 pf stamp from the "Yacht" definitive series. Michel makes a distinction in its' numbering system, calling this a "Mitlaeufer", i.e. a stamp that had been replaced by a distinctive issue but was still valid and used while valid.
