Item Description

The stamp in this listing is a stamp issued for use in the German “Treaty Port” post offices in China. This stamp is listed in Scott as German Offices in China #6. THIS STAMP WAS USED AT THE GERMAN CROWN COLONY OF KIAUTSCHOU (Kiauchau in English, now spelled Jiaozhou) which was leased to Germany in 1898 for 99 years. Although the colony was founded in 1898, Kiautschou used generic stamps prepared for German Post Offices in China until Kiautschou stamps of the “Kaiser’s Yacht” colonial series were issued there. Forerunners such as this one can only be identified by their post marks.

This stamp has a clear cancel from Tsingtau, Kiautschou dated 21 August 1900

As a forerunner, this stamp is listed in Scott as Kiautschou #A8 in the Classic Specialized Catalogue with a value of $20. Michel lists this stamp as V 1 II with a 2020 value of €20

Kiautschou stamps were first issued in values of marks and pfennig as were stamps in the German Empire proper. Starting in 1905, Kiautschou stamps were reissued in values of (Chinese) dollars and cents, and German Offices in China were overprinted with values in this currency as well. Germany’s 99 year lease was terminated by the Republic of China in 1914, and German post offices in China closed soon after as Germany was losing all of her overseas colonies during World War I.
