Item Description

The stamp in this listing is a stamp issued for use in the German post office network in China, in 1898. This one ended up being used in the German colony of Kiautschou as per the postmark. As such it is a "forerunner" or a stamp from another entity used in a place which would eventually issue its' own stamps, but had not yet done so when the stamp was used.

This one, with the overprint "CHINA" at a 45 degree angle, is listed in Scott as Kiauchau #A17, and in Michel as Kiautschou # V 4 I.

This stamp is cancelled with a circular date stamp reading "Tsingtau / Kiautschou" and a date of 8 January 1900.

Please note: This stamp does have a tiny thin directly behind the letter "N" of the "CHINA" overprint. It is only visible when held up to the light. Scans of the reverse will not show the thin, but are available upon request.

Kiautschou was established as a German colony / protectorate in 1897 on a 99-year lease, similar to what would later happen with the British and the New Territories of Hong Kong. Kiautschou was located in Shandong province in northern China, with the village of Tsingtau (now Qingdao) as its’ capitol. It remained a German colony until the end of November 1914, when Japan seized control of it during the first months of World War I. Japan retained control for several years, until it was returned to China in 1922. (During the Japanese occupation, Japanese Offices in China stamps were used with new cancel devices.)

Although Kiautschou stamps were first issued in German currency, i.e. mark and pfennig denominations, this was changed in 1905 to values expressed in Chinese dollars and cents. This remained the colonial currency until 1914.
