Item Description

This listing is a used strip of 3 stamps issued for use in the German colony of Kiautschou (Kiauchau) which was located in eastern China’s Shandong peninsula. These stamps are listed in Scott as Kiautschou #25 and has a face value of 4 cents. This strip was cancelled at the branch post office of Tsingtau-Tapautau, in the "Chinese" section of the city.

This cancel has an ARGe value of EUR 15 for a single strike on a single stamp. Cancel date 2 May 1908.

Kiautschou was established as a German colony / protectorate in 1897 on a 99-year lease, similar to what would later happen with the British and the New Territories of Hong Kong. Kiautschou was located in Shandong province in northern China, with the village of Tsingtau (now Qingdao) as its’ capitol. It remained a German colony until the end of World War I, when Japan seized control of it. It would be returned to China in 1922.

Although Kiautschou stamps were first issued in German currency, i.e. mark and pfennig denominations, this was changed in 1905 to values expressed in Chinese dollars and cents. This remained the colonial currency until 1914.
