Item Description
The stamp in this listing is a set of two stamps issued for use in the German colony of Kiautschou (Kiauchau) which was located in eastern China’s Shandong peninsula. They are listed in Scott as Kiautschou #23 & 24. Each one is used, and on piece--but has a slightly different cancel. The 2c stamp, #24, has an example of the ARGe Tsingtau type 10a CDS, while the 1c (#23) stamp has an example of ARGe Tsingtau Type 8 CDS. Both read "Tsingtau / Kiautschou" with a star on the left side of the CDS between the two words at approximately 9 o'clock and the letter "a" at 3 o'clock. Unusually for German colonies of the time, these two devices were in use simultaneously at the same post office. This situation was corrected with the letter "a" was removed from the 10a cancel, which was thereafter only used as a "reserve" cancel to be used in special circumstances.
Cancel 10a has a CV of €15 due to its' shorter period of use. Cancel 8 is much more common, and has the minimum ARGe CV of €5.
the Two Cancels Can Be Distinguished as Follows:
Cancel 8:
When extended through the centre of the CDS, the bottom stroke of the first "T" in "Tsingtau" will intersect the letter "O" at the end of "Kiautschou".
Cancel 10a"
The downward stroke of the first "T" of "Tsingtau" extended through the centre of the CDS lines up with the vertical line on the right-hand side of the final "U" of "Kiautschou."
Please see scans.
Kiautschou was established as a German colony / protectorate in 1897 on a 99-year lease, similar to what would later happen with the British and the New Territories of Hong Kong. Kiautschou was located in Shandong province in northern China, with the village of Tsingtau (now Qingdao) as its’ capitol. It remained a German colony until the end of World War I, when Japan seized control of it. It would be returned to China in 1922.
