Item Description
In a short career that burned brightly and hotly, JAMES DEAN, in the space of just 5 years, gained a lasting fame as an icon of teen angst and rebellion. Just a few days ago was the 68th anniversary of his death in a high-speed auto accident in Northern California, and I was reminded of this long-forgotten cover in my archives.I was fortunate to attend the First Day of Issue ceremony for the JAMES DEAN stamp on the backlot of the Warner Bros. Studio in 1996, and at the last minute, grabbed an ARTOPAGES blank to take with me. Inspired by the beautiful portrait by stamp designer and painter MICHAEL DEAS, I later added a caricature of a somber JAMES DEAN looking over his shoulder, wearing his familiar blue jeans and white T-shirt, and with an omnipresent cigarette in his hand.
This is a one-of-a-kind FDC that I made for myself.
