Item Description
Condition: Small part of the cancel bottom right of stamp.Jamaica red cross flight biplane world war one judaica poland
A voluntary organisation, the jamaica war stamp league was founded in november 1915 by mr. Lewis ashenheim, a kingston solicitor. The aims of the league were to support the british red cross, collect funds for the purchase of aircraft for the royal flying corps and the relief of polish jews. One fund raising method was the sale of 1/2d charity labels which were available from post offices. They depicted a biplane above a red cross and were printed by dennison of framington, u.S.A. There are three different types: 1.) 1st december 1915 printed in red. (shown) 2.) 15th january 1916 with 'jamaica' added in black. 3.) 11th march 1916 with 'half penny' added in black.
