Item Description

Italy, Scott #383, (Sassone #422), used (o), 1937, Commemorating the Bimillennium of the Birth of Caesar Augustus (earlier Octavianus), stamp shows a sculpture of the downward glazing Augustus Caesar (popular among collectors as the ‘Worried Caesar’), stamp inscription translates as: ‘By my command and under my auspices, war was executed in Ethiopia’, (perhaps a historical reference and justification for Italy’s war of aggression fought between Italy and Ethiopia from October 1935 to February 1937 - the Second Italo-Abyssinian War), stamp was issued on the occasion of an Exhibit opened by Il Duce Benito Mussolini in Rome, 75 centesimi, photogravure printed, perforated: 14, watermarked: crown (Scott watermark #140)(Sassone filagrana corona), scarlet, Scott 2019 catalog value: $4.75, slightly off-centered, very light, black-inked, double-rimmed, nearly a classic full circular, half counter-clockwise turned, socked-on-the-nose cancellation with nearly complete mailing details over the lower half of the stamp, the lightness of the cancel leaves the main image largely clear, sound back, penciled inverted Scott identification marks on the back, good perforations; image clear cancel with mailing details warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch' offering. The stamp you see will be the stamp you receive.
