Item Description

The item in this listing is a used Italian postage stamp of the 1908 definitive series issued by the Italian post office for use at the Italian post office in "Pechino" (i.e. Beijing) China.  It is listed in Scott as #19 and has a  CV of $72.50. 

For those unfamiliar with the “Foreign Office” concept, in brief, the world powers in the mid-19th to early 20th centuries opened branches of their own post offices in foreign countries in which they had commercial interests.  This was done because the local post office was deemed “insufficient” but was also done as a mark of imperialism.  In this time period, having foreign post offices was as much a sign of a country’s international power as it useful in facilitating communication. 

In China, Italy opened two post offices in 1917.  Stamps overprinted "PECHINO" were issued for use at the Italian office in Beijing, while stamps overprinted "TIENTSIN" were issued for use at the office in Tianjin.   Italy was the last country to open post offices in China, joining France, French Indochina, Great Britain, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States.  (Germany had previously operated post offices in China, but these closed in early 1917.)  All of these offices were closed at the end of 1922, excepting those operated in official colonies such as Hong Kong.

Paypal, Money Orders, and Checks payable in the US are accepted. Credit cards accepted through paypal only. Checks must be drawn on a US bank, or I cannot cash them! (I can no longer accept Canadian Postal Money Orders, even those in US dollars-sorry!)

International: 14 days from the 7th day after the item is sent.
