Item Description

Ireland (Éire), Scott #472 (Hibernian #D101), used(o), 1981, Fifth Definitive Series, Gerl Ancient Irish Artifacts Series, stamp shows an Dog from an Ancient Brooch found in County Kilkenny and held in the National Museum of Ireland; the name of the series is from the surname of the designer, Heinrich Gerl of Munich, Germany, who won an international stamp design competition sponsored by the Irish Post Office in 1966; these were the stamps to replace one the world's longest running definitive series, the "Map of Ireland" and "Sword of Light" series, which had run since 1922; eleven artists submitted fifty seven designs; Gerl's designs were based on early Irish, English, and Welsh celtic art, no watermark, numerals only, perforated: 14¼x15, lithography printed, 22 pence, (Scott: dark green)(Hibernian: turquoise green), Scott 2019 catalog value: 25¢. Nicely centered, light, half circular, black-inked, single-rimmed, slightly slanted, socked-on-the-nose cancellation with partial mailing details over the lower half of the stamp with a trailing box cancellation on the right border, both leave the main image largely clear, sound back, good perforations, centering and image free cancel warrants a selling price premium, inventory listing code: MF. This is not a 'bait and switch' offer. The stamp you see will be the one you receive.
