Item Description
Rare message-reply card showing requirements of postal monopoly on first class mail: 1c george washington /martha washington paid-reply card, (scott #uy7), precanceled (or obliterated) on the reply card only, unused, the shipper would have filled out his fields on two cards, and addressed the message card, then the "station of origin" where the cargo flight originated would fill out their field, finally the destination station would fill out their sections and the card would be returned to scandinavian airlines main hub in new york city, it would have gone in a returning sas flight but the post office department still collected a penny due to the postal monopoly therefore the card was obliterated by the printer to give the postal service its payment, the imprint "company mail" makes this clear, a convoluted way of doing this, but if sas had used their own cards and put a stamp on the message card and returned it by brm they would have paid three cents total instead of two and the card would have been slower, in this case they went directly to the cargo dept, i saw a used example of this many years ago but they are of the highest order of rarity, mr card was folded but is in good condition, very intact and rare! Fine-vfShips flat.
This card is circa 1949-51. SAS formed after the war and the "New York International Airport" (today JFK) was finished in 1948. SAS and other foreign airlines began using terminals and hubs there in 1949. The penny postage rate ended Dec 31 1951, so the time period is very easy to ascertain . . .
