Item Description
In March of 1997 Iceland issued two stamps depicting works by two of their most celebrated artists of the 1930s and 40s.The 150k stamp displays the painting 'Song of Iceland', painted by Svavar Gu∂nasson in occupied Copenhagen in 1944. It depicts an allegorical rising of the spirit of Iceland just before they proclaimed their independence as a nation.
The 200k stamp shows Thorvaldur Skúlasson's 'Composition: The Harbor', a colorful and abstract painting imparting the bustle of a typical harbor in Iceland, which had become, by the 1930s, the center of Iceland's economic power as fishing overtook farming as the greatest exporter.
The handcolored cachet shows the Puffin Cachets mascot at his easel, covered in paint, but happily illustrating what he sees . . just not quite recognizably the fishing boat in the harbor outside his window! (He's actually painted, in large letters, "Icelandic Paintings" in his native language!)
The cover is on an envelope handmade from gray granite stationery.
The two stamps in this set are tied by one of two official First Day of Issue cancels from Reykjavík on March 6, 1997 . . . which depicts a painter's easel just like the one that the Puffin artiste is using!
The reverse bears the Puffin Cachets logo and shows this to be cover number 1 of only 8 covers sent to Iceland for servicing!
