Item Description
In 2001 Iceland reached the end of their 4-year stamp series of Nytjafiskar - or 'Fish that are hunted, prepared and eaten'. But colloquially it means 'Useful Fish', and on this handcolored cachet it looks like the Puffin fisherman has a whole boatload of 'Useful'!Previous issues in this series contained four different stamp designs each year, but in 2001 only these two were issued - the Greenland Halibut and the Atlantic Saithe. Perhaps the 'usefulness' of the 2001 catch was not what it used to be!
This cover bears the two new stamps tied to the cover by the official pictorial Útgáfudagur cancel showing small images of the two fish, and struck on 18 January 2001. There is also an extra 'auxiliary' cancel on the envelope, as is the Icelandic tradition.
The reverse bears the Puffin Cachets logo and shows this to be cover #1 of only 9 covers sent to Iceland for servicing.
