Item Description

The item in this listing is a single postally used stamp issued by the Hong Kong post office in 1900, but used at the British post office in Shanghai, China. The stamp has an SON Shanghai CDS, index C, with a clear date of September 7, 1901.

Stamps of Hong Kong were used at the British post offices in China.

For those unfamiliar with this term, multiple countries (the US, the UK, France, Russia, Italy, Germany, and Japan among others) opened postal facilities in other countries during the 19th century. Officially this occurred because the other country's postal services was "inadequate", but in reality, it was also a mark of imperialism. No country worthy of being called an international power failed to have a post office somewhere else in the 19th century, be that in a colony or in a post office abroad.

Beginning in 2018, Scott lists Hong Kong stamps cancelled at the British PO's in China using the "L" prefix. HK #37 with a Shanghai cancel is now also listed as #LSH39.
