Henry Stinemetts cover design on Crosby cachet. Event Cover. U.S.S. Macon. "Afire and Sinking Off Stb'd Bow" overprint. Postmarked on front, February 12, 1935, U.S.S. Northampton "U.S.S. Macon Afiresinking" ; on back, February 15, 1935, San Pedro, California. Addressed to Henry Stinemetts, 223 West 2nd St., Los Angeles, Calif., Room 135. A good, detailed article on Stinemetts' interesting life and his rare covers is Christine C. Sanders and W. Eugene Sanders, Jr., "Henry Stinemetts: Naval Cachetmaker and Cover Decorator Extraordinaire." They characterize Stinemetts as "showman folk art." Covers from his "first phase" relied on others for the cachet which he decorated with precisely cut-out images. He typically decorated the corners of his covers. He produced few covers and most of them are one-of-a-kind. This cover measures 9 1/2" x 4 1/8".
