Item Description
After laying dormant for 12 years, the RATTLESNAKE ISLAND LOCAL POST has been resurrected as of Fall 2022, and here is a cacheted FDC of their first three contemporary issues since 2010!Rattlesnake Island is an 85-acre island located in Lake Erie, and has the only USPS-sanctioned local post operating in the United States. From 1966 to 1989, USPS mail was routed by way of Port Clinton, Ohio, but then went inoperative. The RILP was restarted in 2005, and was run until 2010 by the founder of the RILP, and owner of the island, Dr. James Frackelton, until his passing. The RILP lay dormant from 2010 until life-long Port Clinton resident, Dave Gill, relaunched the local post with its first new issue on November 10, 2022, with three new stamps depicting Commercial Vessels servicing the Lake Erie Island.
This cachet pictures a newborn baby rattlesnake and explanatory text. All three triangular RILP stamps (so configured due to USPO regulations stating that rectangular stamps appeared too similar to US issues!) are cancelled with the Official RILP hand stamp of November 10, 2022, the First Day of renewed delivery by Griffing Flying Services. The stamps depict three lake vessels that visit the island, including a construction vessel owned by the Ken Gill Construction Company, of which the President, Dave Gill, is the new Postmaster of the RILP, and the guiding light behind its rebirth!
This is the 32nd regular issue of the RATTLESNAKE ISLAND LOCAL POST!
And there is a great article about the rebirth of the RILP on the American Philatelic Society website! Just search on the word 'rattlesnake' (I can't post a direct link here on HipStamp). Dave Gill and the artist of the stamps, Beth Gregerson, will be at the Great American Stamp Show in Cleveland in August to talk about the Post, the Stamps, and the special upcoming 2023 new issues!
This cover is franked with a Erie harbor Lighthouse single and bears a light pictorial cancel from Port Clinton,OH (which is where Griffing Flying Services departs and lands) with the matching 11/10/22 date.
