Folklore tells us that the width or intensity of a Wooly Bear caterpillar's black and brown bands can predict the severity or mildness of the coming winter in the caterpillar's vicinity. Normally a trained meteorologist would pooh-pooh such unscientific prognostications, but Cleveland, Ohio's most popular TV weatherman in the 70s and 80s, Dick Goddard, took the little insect's forecasting abilities to heart and created the WOOLY BEAR FESTIVAL to celebrate this bit of homespun fun.Held each year in Vermilion, Ohio, where my mother lived for a decade, the Wooly Bear Festival featured a parade, a midway and all kinds of Wooly Bear inspired art and food.
This one-of-a-kind hand-drawn and colored cachet was created for my mom, who I think had a bit of a crush on Goddard the handsome weatherman!. It depicts a Wooly Bear caterpillar dressed for winter, and features a pictorial cancel from the festival that was created by Dick Goddard himself, who was an amateur cartoonist.
