Item Description
The item in this listing is a postally used example of Hawai`i Scott #UX3, a 3-cent postal card issued by the Hawaiian post office in 1882.This one was mailed from Honolulu on November 13 (1884) to Carlsruhe (now Karlsruhe), Germany. The Honolulu postmark is Meyer-Harris type 234.62, and is a relatively common "7" on the rarity scale, equating to between 1000 and 2000 examples thought or known to exist. This cancel was applied in 1884, but this style of cancel only showed the month and day. A New York transit cancel dated November 29, 1884, was applied when it reached that city. There are no arrival cancels from Germany.
Please Note:
This card does have a light crease down the center, and it also has what appears to be two repaired, punched holes on the left edge. Some postal cards from this period have such holes as they were attached to file folders or binders via the holes. Clear, long message in German on the reverse.

The history of the stamp is as follows:
Scott #UX3 was issued in 1882 to pay the 3-cent postal card rate to members of the U.P.U. all over the world, except for U.P.U. members in North America, which were assessed a 2-cent rate. By 1885, it became apparent that Hawai`i had incorrectly assessed a 3-cent rate for such destinations, as the world-wide postal card rate for mail between U.P.U. members was supposed to be 2 cents. This card was correctly mailed during the period when this rate was thought to be correct.
The indicia of this postal card shows two crossed emblems of the Kalakaua dynasty, a flaming torch and a Pulo`ulo`u. This second item is sometimes referred to as a "Kapu Stick" and is an ancient symbol of Hawaiian royalty. Both appear on the Royal Coat of Arms used in Hawai`i prior to the 1893 US-led overthrow of the government.
Most extant examples of all Hawaiian postal stationery are mint. Ones that were used, and for their intended purpose, are must harder to obtain.
