Item Description

The stamps in this listing is for one example of Hawai`i #U4 as a cut square. All Hawaiian postal stationery envelopes show an indicia with a view of Honolulu Harbor as seen from the ocean.

This one was formerly part of a letter that arrived at San Francisco without a Hawaiian cancel. The circular grid shown here was applied by the US Post Office at San Francisco as a Paquetbot cancel. This one has a San Francisco date without a year, so likely dates to the 1880's.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

Scott #U4 was issued first to pay the letter rate to UPU members in North America. Later, it paid the letter rate to any UPU member, whether in North America or not. This would be the only design of this denomination ever issued by the Hawaiian post office, although an 1893 version features the same vignette with a red overprint marking the establishment of the Provisional Government that year.

International: 14 days from the 7th day after the item is sent.
