Item Description
This listing is for one (1) example of a cut square of Hawai`i Scott #U3, a postal stationary envelope first issued by the Hawaiian Post Office in 1884. It is postally used, cancelled with a nearly complete cancel applied at the Kahului, Maui, post office. This cancel is listed as Meyer-Harris type 281.01 (II), with a clear date of September 1st, 1892. KAHULUI 281.01 (II) IS A RARITY 6 CANCEL, meaning that between 500 AND 1000 EXAMPLES ARE THOUGHT OR KNOWN TO EXIST.PLEASE NOTE: There is a slight fault, namely that this cut square is somewhat cut to shape.
Please see scan for details.
The history of this postal stationary is as follows:
Scott #U3 was first issued as in 1884. The 4¢ denomination was issued specifically to pay the double the domestic letter rate, for any double-weight letter sent between post offices within Hawai`i. International uses are known uprated with additional stamps. U3 was the envelope with the lowest print run of any Hawaiian envelope as it really had only one main use. This was the only Hawaiian envelope not to be overprinted the Provisional Government in 1893, when the Americans in Honolulu overthrew the legitimate Hawaiian Government.
A total of 18,000 examples of U3 were printed and issued in 1884.
The image of the imprinted stamp shows an artist’s impression of what Honolulu Harbour was supposed to look like from the ocean in 1884.
These envelopes were all printed by the American Bank Note Company of New York, and shipped to Honolulu.
