Item Description

The stamp in this listing is for one example of Hawai`i #U2b sent from Kohala, Hawai`i, to Honolulu. It is a commercial cover sent to Castle and Cooke, one of Hawai`i's largest companies.

This cover was sent from Kohala in nothern Hawai`i to Honolulu. The Kohala postmark is Meyer-Harris type 282.011 and has a rarity factor of 8 on the Meyer-Harris scale., and is dated March 22, 1892. A Honolulu type 231.81 (rarity 10) receiving cancel dated the next day (March 23) was applied to the back. One day of transit was typical for 19th century Hawai`i.

For cancels rated 8 on the Meyer-Harris scale, between 3,000 and 5,000 examples are thought or known to exist. Cancels rated 10 are the most common on the scale, and over 5,000 examples are known.

Intact covers from this period, however, are very difficult to obtain.

The history of the stamp is as follows: 

Scott #U2  shows a view of Honolulu Harbour as it would have appeared from the Pacific Ocean in the 1880’s.  This was the only design of postal stationery envelope ever issued by the Hawaiian post office. The same indicia was used for five (5) different denominations of envelope, each printed in a different color.

This value was the “workhorse” envelope of late-19th century Hawai`i, as it paid the basic domestic letter rate as well as some international printed matter rates.
