Item Description

The stamp in this listing is for one example of Hawai`i #U2a sent from Honolulu to Lihu`e, Kaua`i. The Honolulu 231.71 (rarity 10) origin cancel is dated June 1 1891 (2 PM). No receiving cancel is visible on either side. Please note that this one is reduced slighlty at left. About 1/2 inch of the cover was cut away, probably when the envelope was opened in 1891.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

Scott #U2 shows a view of Honolulu Harbour as it would have appeared from the Pacific Ocean in the 1880’s. This was the only design of postal stationery envelope ever issued by the Hawaiian post office. The same indicia was used for five (5) different denominations of envelope, each printed in a different color.

This value was the “workhorse” envelope of late-19th century Hawai`i, as it paid the basic domestic letter rate as well as some international printed matter rates.

Paypal, Money Orders, and Checks payable in the US are accepted. Credit cards accepted through paypal only. Checks must be drawn on a US bank, or I cannot cash them! (I can no longer accept Canadian Postal Money Orders, even those in US dollars-sorry!)
