Item Description

The item in this listing is a single, unused examples of a cut square from a Hawaiian postal stationery envelope issued in 1884.  Listed in Scott as #U1, this item is an example of a special printing issued in 1889 of which just 5,000 examples were created.  This can be seen by the pale green shade of the indicia, as well as the lack of a "flaw" in the ornament below the second "LU" of  "HONOLULU".  The normal printing of Scott #U1 is a darker green, and has a progressive flaw in the ornament which appears as a "bite" out of the left side of the ornament.  The most recent catalogue value for D'Assis E15 (2004) is $150.00.  THIS CUT SQUARE, HOWEVER, SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN PASTED INTO A STAMP ALBUM AT SOME POINT.  PLEASE SEE SCAN FOR DETAILS.   

The history of the stamp is as follows:

This envelope was first issued in 1884, without overprint, by the post office of the Kingdom of Hawai`i.  This denomination paid the single letter "drop" rate for domestic letters (i.e. post restante letters or other letters delivered within the area served by the post office from which the letter was mailed) from the date of issue until the end of Hawaiian postal independence on 13 June 1900.  This denomination of envelope also exists uprated to full domestic postage (2 cents) or to international rates.

The design of the indicia of this stamp shows an artist's vision of Honolulu harbour as seen from the ocean in 1884.  It was printed by the American Bank Note Company of New York, then shipped to Honoulu to be issued. 

All postal stationery envelopes were withdrawn from sale at the end of 1897, with most unused examples burned.
