Item Description

The item in this listing is a single, unused examples of a cut square from a Hawaiian postal stationery envelope issued in 1893. Listed in Scott as #U12.

This example shows an offset of the stamp indicia on the inside of envelope, which is a printing variety noted in the specialist D'Assis catalog of Hawaiian issues. Given the catalog number of "EP5-O", this variety is rated as *2* on that catalog's rarity scale. this equates to 10 or fewer examples thought or known to exist.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

This envelope was first issued in 1884, without overprint, by the post office of the Kingdom of Hawai`i. This denomination paid the single letter international rate for letters posted from Hawai`i to other UPU nations in North America (until 1885) and all other UPU nations until the end of Hawaiian postal independence on 13 June 1900.

The design of the indicia of this stamp shows an artist's vision of Honolulu harbour as seen from the ocean in 1884. It was printed by the American Bank Note Company of New York, then shipped to Honoulu to be issued.

All postal stationery envelopes were withdrawn from sale at the end of 1897, with most unused examples burned.
