Item Description

The item in this listing is a single used Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #82, and issued in 1899. The stamp has a face value of 5 cents and shows the world-famous statue of King Kamehameha the Great in Honolulu.

This example of Scott #82 was cancelled on the island of Maui, town uncertain.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

Following the legally questionable overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom on January 17, 1893, the Hawaiian post office at first issued provisionally overprinted stamps, and later a set of stamps known to Hawaiian collectors as the “Pictorial” series (Scott #74-82). 5 cents in 1894 would paid the basic international letter rate for letters sent between UPU member nations.

Scott #82 was issued after annexation in July of 1899. This was required due to the decisions of the 1897 UPU Congress summit, which required stamps paying certain rates to be specific colors. The basic letter rate stamp was required to be blue; the 5 cent stamp from 1894 was an unsuitable shade of lake.
