Item Description
The stamps in this listing is for one example of Hawai`i #81 with a cancel from the town of Waialua on the north shore of the island of O`ahu. Only the month of the date, August, printed. However, based on this stamp’s period of validity, that would have to have been August of 1899. Please see scan for details.Waialua used two different cancelling devices, type 281.01 and 282.013. Based on this stamp’s issue date and certain other factors, it is 95% likely that this cancel is type 281.01. However, both cancels are rated a “5” on the Meyer-Harris rarity scale, equating to between 250 and 500 examples thought or known to exist.
The history of the stamp is as follows:
Scott #81 shows a view of Honolulu Harbour as it would have appeared from the Pacific Ocean in the 1890’s. Stamps of this design were first issued on February 28, 1894, as part of the “Pictoral” series issued by the Republic of Hawai`i—although the 1894 issue is listed as Scott #75, not #81.
This value was the “workhorse” definitive stamp of late-1890’s Hawai`i, as it paid the basic domestic letter rate as well as the rate for postcards sent to other countries in the Universal Postal Union (UPU.) These stamps were printed by the American Bank Note Company of New York, although this particular stamp was subject to numerous double transfer errors, incorrectly entered plates, etc.
Scott #81 was issued in 1899 to comply with the decisions made at the 1897 Universal Postal Union (UPU) Congress, which decreed that stamps which paid certain rates had to be in specific colours. In this case, the basic domestic 1st class stamp had to be certain shades of rose or carmine. In both Hawai`i and the US, this rate was 2 cents, which is why early 20th century 2-cent US stamps are also some variety of red. The original stamp, Scott #75, did not meet this requirement as it was printed in brown.
