Item Description

The item in this listing is an postally used example a Hawaiian stamp listed in Scott as #81. This stamp was cancelled with the target killer and a portion of the CDS of a cancel applied at the Waipahu, O`ahu post office. The letters "HU" are visible at the top of the CDS as shown.

This cancel is rated a "5" on the Meyer-Harris scale, equating to between 250 and 500 examples known--although this is very partial.

The history of the stamp, Scott #81, is as follows:

Scott #81 was issued in 1899, after political annexation of Hawai`i to the United States, but before the US Post Office took over operations from the Hawaiian Post Office. This stamp and two others, Scott #80 and #82, were issued as the result of a Universal Postal Union Congress decision made in 1897, namely that stamps paying certain rates had to be issued in specific colours. This stamp, which paid the domestic letter rate, was to be issued in rose or carmine&mdashthe same reason US 2-cent stamps from this period are also in rose or carmine. The older issue of the same design, Scott #75, was an unsuitable brown.
