Item Description
The stamp in this listing is a postally used example of Scott #81, a stamp issued by the Hawaiian post office in February 1899. The stamp is cancelled with a purple Hawai`i island cancel, Meyer-Harris type 259.01. This cancel has a clear date of December 15, 1899. The town name mostly did not print, but it is most likely Kawaihae, as the letter “E” at the end of the town name did print, barely. If this is Kawaihae 259.01, THIS IS A RARITY 3 CANCEL ON THE MEYER-HARRIS SCALE, EQUATING TO BETWEEN 75 TO 150 KNOWN EXAMPLES.The history of the stamp is as follows:
Scott #81 shows a view of Honolulu Harbour as it would have appeared from the Pacific Ocean in the 1890’s. Stamps of this design were first issued on February 28, 1894, as part of the “Pictoral” series issued by the Republic of Hawai`i—although the 1894 issue is listed as Scott #75, not #81.
This value was the “workhorse” definitive stamp of late-1890’s Hawai`i, as it paid the basic domestic letter rate as well as the rate for postcards sent to other countries in the Universal Postal Union (UPU.) These stamps were printed by the American Bank Note Company of New York, although this particular stamp was subject to numerous double transfer errors, incorrectly entered plates, etc.
Scott #81 was issued in 1899 to comply with the decisions made at the 1897 Universal Postal Union (UPU) Congress, which decreed that stamps which paid certain rates had to be in specific colours. In this case, the basic domestic 1st class stamp had to be certain shades of rose or carmine. In both Hawai`i and the US, this rate was 2 cents, which is why early 20th century 2-cent US stamps are also some variety of red. The original stamp, Scott #75, did not meet this requirement as it was printed in brown.
