Item Description

The item in this listing is a single Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #80, and issued in 1899. The stamp has a face value of 1 cent and shows the coat of arms of the "Provisional Hawaiian Government" in existence between 17 January 1893 and 3 July 1894.

This stamp is lightly cancelled with a partial strike of a Honolulu dateless cancel called a "squared circle" used primarily on 2nd class domestic mail.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

Following the legally questionable overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom on January 17, 1893, the Hawaiian post office at first issued provisionally overprinted stamps, and later a set of stamps known to Hawaiian collectors as the "Pictorial" series (Scott #74-82). 1-cent stamps of this era were issued primarily to pay printed matter and "drop" postal rates. In the late 1800's, domestic first class postage was 2 cents, but a letter mailed at the same post office which would later deliver it paid 1 cent or the "drop" rate. Pairs of 1¢ stamps were also used to pay the basic domestic rate, and might have been used in combination with other stamps to pay international rates.

The 1899 version of this stamp following requirements passed at the 1897 UPU Congress which required stamps of this rate to be green in colour.
