Item Description
The item in this listing is a single used Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #80, and issued in 1899. This stamp is postally used, with a cancel applied at the Hilo, Hawai`i post office. The cancel is described in Meyer-Harris as type 271.035, which is rated a "10" on the rarity scale--the most common 19th century Hawaiian cancel. This one is dated November 24, 1899.The history of the stamp is as follows:
This stamp was issued on 2 June, 1899, as part of the “Pictorial” series issued by the Hawaiian post office. Individually, it would have paid the “drop” rate, which was for letters mailed at one post office for delivery at or by that post office’s staff. The postage for letters sent between post offices intra- or inter-island required 2¢ postage. For this reason, this stamp is sometimes found in pairs paying this postage rate. It may also have paid printed matter rates, and possibly the domestic post card rate—although usage of post office issued postal cards was much more common in this period.
The design of the stamp shows the coat of arms of the Provisional Hawaiian Government, in existence from 17 January 1893 – 3 July 1894. The design was not changed when Hawai`i became a Republic on 4 July 1894, although the Republic’s coat of arms is significantly different from this design.
Scott #80 was issued AFTER the legally questionable annexation of the Hawaiian islands to the United States of America, which took place on 12 August 1898. The reason for this issue was an 1897 UPU Congress requirement that stamps paying this rate be issued in specific shades of dark green, and the then-current 1¢ stamp was an unsuitable yellow. Additionally, the US was taking a long time in taking over postal operations in Hawai`i, and Hawai`i would remain an independent postal entity until 13 June 1900.
