Item Description

The item in this listing is a single used Hawaiian postage stamp, listed in Scott as #77, and issued in 1894. The stamp has a light cancel and some unfortunately short perfs.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

Following the legally questionable overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom on January 17, 1893, the Hawaiian post office at first issued provisionally overprinted stamps, and later a set of stamps known to Hawaiian collectors as the "Pictorial" series (Scott #74-82). The date "1893" on the stamp refers not to its' issue but to the date of the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. The star on the stamp was meant to symbolise the star that the Americans who overthrew the government hoped would be added to the US flag when Hawai`i was annexed as a state. (The country would be annexed as a territory in August of 1898, although the territory was not actually established until June of 1900.) 10 cents in 1894 would have paid the registration rate as well as the rate for a double weight letter sent internationally between UPU member nations.
