Item Description
The stamp in this listing is for one example of Hawai`i #76 on a cover posted from Kealia Kaua`i, to New Jersey, USA, on March 20, 1897. The transit and receiving marks are not clear, but the Honolulu cancel date is likely March 21, 1897. The back of the cover has a San Francisco machine transit cancel dated March 31, and an Elizbeth, New Jersey receiver most likely dated a week later. The Kealia type 282.011 postmark is rated a 9 on the Meyer-Harris rarity scale, which equates to between 3000 and 5000 examples thought or known to exist. This number includes all off-cover strikes as well. (The Honolulu 231.72 cancel is a actually a much more scarce 5 on the same scale, equating to between 250 and 500 examples. )
The reason for this is that it was applied in purple ink, which was only done for a period of 6 months from October 1896-March 1897.
The cover is a larger example of what is typically known as a "ladies' cover" measuring 3 1/4 inches high by 4 1/4 inches long or 8 cm / 10.5 cm. This cover is too small to actually be mailed today.
Please note, the cover is cleanly opened (except for a short segment near to, but not touching , the stamp) , but was opened on both the top and left sides. It also appears that someone in the past used the back to write out some math; most of this was erased.
The cover is otherwise in decent shape for a cover that is now almost 130 years old.
Please see scan for details.
The history of the stamp is as follows:
Scott #75 shows a view of Honolulu Harbour as it would have appeared from the Pacific Ocean in the 1890’s. This stamp was first issued on February 28, 1894, as part of the “Pictoral” series issued by the Republic of Hawai`i.
This value was the “workhorse” definitive stamp of late-1890’s Hawai`i, as it paid the basic domestic letter rate as well as the rate for postcards sent to other countries in the Universal Postal Union (UPU.) These stamps were printed by the American Bank Note Company of New York, although this particular stamp was subject to numerous double transfer errors, incorrectly entered plates, etc.
