Item Description

The item in this listing is a single used, Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #76, and issued in 1894. This stamp is postally used, with a fairly scarce cancel applied at the Papaiko`u post office on the island of Hawai`i on 28 December 1896.

The cancel is listed in Meyer-Harris as Papaiko`u type 255.01, and was in use from April 1896 until 1900 when Hawaiian postal independence ended. This is the only cancel device known to have been used at this post office prior to 1900. It is rated a 4 on the Meyer-Harris scale, equating to between 151 and 250 known examples.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

This stamp shows the statue of King Kamehameha the Great, unifier of the Hawaiian islands and “Napoleon of the Pacific.” The statue is world famous, and stand in front of Ali`iolani Hale, the Hawaiian Supreme Court, in downtown Honolulu. The statue was also featured on the 2008 Hawai`i state quarter issued by the US Mint.

Scott #76 was issued as part of the “Pictorial” series of Hawaiian stamps issued in 1894 by the Provisional Hawaiian Government, (later the Republic of Hawai`i.) For as long as it remained valid for postage, it would have paid the basic letter rate for letters sent within the Universal Postal Union.
