Item Description

The item in this listing is a single used Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #76, and issued in 1894. The stamp has a face value of 5 cents and shows the world-famous statue of King Kamehameha the Great in Honolulu, which now appears on the Hawai`i addition to the “50 State Quarters” series.

This example of Scott #76 was cancelled at the Koloa post office on the island of Kaua`i, with a cancel described as Honomu 282.012 in the Meyer-Harris system. This cancel is a rarity 8 cancel, meaning that between 2000 and 3000 are thought or known to exist.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

Following the legally questionable overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom on January 17, 1893, the Hawaiian post office at first issued provisionally overprinted stamps, and later a set of stamps known to Hawaiian collectors as the “Pictorial” series (Scott #74-82). 5 cents in 1894 would paid the basic international letter rate for letters sent between UPU member nations.
