Item Description

The item in this listing is a single Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #74, and issued in 1894. The stamp has a face value of 1 cent and shows the coat of arms of the “Provisional Hawaiian Government” in existence between 17 January 1893 and 3 July 1894. (The stamp itself was issued in this period.)

This stamp has a nearly SON cancel from the Hilo, Hawai`i, post office applied on 17 February 1899. The top selvage is also still attached, and a small part of the margin inscription (American Bank Note Company, New York" is visible at the top left of the selvage piece.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

Following the legally questionable overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom on January 17, 1893, the Hawaiian post office at first issued provisionally overprinted stamps, and later a set of stamps known to Hawaiian collectors as the “Pictorial” series (Scott #74-82). 1-cent stamps of this era were issued primarily to pay printed matter and “drop” postal rates. In the late 1800’s, domestic first class postage was 2 cents, but a letter mailed at the same post office which would later deliver it paid 1 cent or the “drop” rate. Pairs of 1¢ stamps were also used to pay the basic domestic rate, and might have been used in combination with other stamps to pay international rates.

Paypal, Money Orders, and Checks payable in the US are accepted. Credit cards accepted through paypal only. Checks must be drawn on a US bank, or I cannot cash them! (I can no longer accept Canadian Postal Money Orders, even those in US dollars-sorry!)
