Item Description

This item is a Hawaiian stamp issued in 1893, listed as Scott #71. It is mint no gum, and has excellent centering for the issue. CV $40.00 for either mint or used.

Please Note:
-mint no gum is the typical condition for unused examples of this stamp. A large portion of the printing was later found to have been stuck together c. 1896, and were soaked apart.

-there is a small pinhole at the upper right corner of the "18" in the upper right corner.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

This underlying stamp shows the portrait of Mataio Kekuanao`a, the royal governor of O`ahu from 1834 to 1868, and Kuhina Nui (essentially Prime Minister) for about 8 months between December 1863 and August 1864. The underlying stamp was first issued in 1871. This was the only design of the 18-cent value issued by the Hawaiian Post Office. This denomination paid the triple-weight letter rate to the United States between 1871 and 1882, and following Hawaiian admission to the UPU in 1882, it was rendered obsolete and without a rate to pay.

Following the legally questionable overthrow of the Hawaiian government by the United States, the American-led government ordered the post office to overprint the stamps with the words "Provisional / GOVT. / 1893" and began to reissue them on 20 May 1893. By this time, the 18-cent value only saw use on philatelic mailings or on heavier (typically registered) international letters, when it could be combined with lower value stamps to make up a higher rate.
