Item Description

This item is a Hawaiian stamp, issued in 1893, and listed in Scott as Hawaii #64. Centering is good for this issue. CV $35.00.

There are some unfortunately short perfs on this stamp, notably in the middle of the right edge and at the upper left corner.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

The stamp shows the copy of the statue of King Kamehameha the Great (c. 1758-1819) who unified the Hawaiian islands into a single country in stages between 1778 and 1810. The original statue sank to the bottom of the Atlantic near the Falkland Islands ocean while being shipped to Hawai`i in 1880. A copy was made and shipped to Honolulu, which was installed in front of the Supreme Court in Honolulu in 1881--while the original was recovered and installed in Kamehameha's home district of Kohala on the island of Hawai`i.

The Honolulu statue has become world famous, and is the backdrop for many photos taken in downtown Honolulu.

Stamps of this design were first issued in 1883. The 25-cent value was issued to pay the postage for very heavy letters, both registered and unregistered, sent within the Universal Postal Union.

Some regard this stamp as the only commemorative issued by the Hawaiian post office, as it was issued specifically as a result of Hawaiian admission to the UPU in 1883 and has the words "Postal Union" and "1883" as part of the design. The original stamp is listed as Scott #47, and was issued without overprint.

Stocks of this issue still on hand at the time of the legally questionable overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy (January 1893) were reissued with the red "Provisional Government" overprint starting in May 1893 to make them more politically correct. The stamp with overprint is listed in Scott as #64.

Please note that this stamp does have some pencil marks on the reverse, which is fairly typical for stamps of this issue.
