Item Description
This item is a Hawaiian stamp issued in 1893, listed as Scott #63. It is a fairly rare Hawaiian stamp, with just 7,500 created in 1893. (Only two other of the overprinted 1893 "Provisional Government issue had lower print runs.)Please note the obvious badly pulled perf. This is the reason for this stamp being discounted. It also has disturbed gum.
The history of the stamp is as follows:
This stamp shows the portrait of William Pitt Leleiohoku II, the brother of King Kalakaua and Queen Lili`uokalani. Leleiohoku was named as Kalakaua's heir presumptive when Kalakaua became King, but the new Crown Prince died of rheumatic fever at the age of 22, two years into his brother's reign. This left their sister, Lili`uokalani, to ascend the throne in 1891 when Kalakaua himself died.
Stamps of this denomination were initially issued to pay for double-weight letters to the United States, for which a 6 cents/ half ounce letter rate existed between 1871 and 1881. Following Hawaiian entry to the UPU in early 1882, this stamp's usefulness was reduced to letter rates for items sent to British colonies in the Pacific that were not in the UPU, domestic registered letters, and certain parcel rates to the United States.
The first stamp of this design and denomination was issued in black in 1875. The black version without overprint is listed in Scott as #36. The color was changed to red lilac in 1883, probably because black stamps don't show cancels well. The red-lilac version of this stamp without overprint is Scott #46.
Following the legally questionable overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom on January 17, 1893, the Hawaiian post office at first issued provisionally overprinted stamps. The overprinting was done to make the stamps more politically correct, as stamps of the Monarchy showed members of the royal family.
Scott #63 was created from stocks of Scott #46 that were on hand at the Honolulu post office at the time of the overthrow of the Monarchy. Stamps of this denomination were kept on hand largely for sale to collectors, and were withdrawn from sale at the end of 1896. These stamps remained valid for postage until the end of Hawaiian postal independence on 13 June 1900.
