Item Description

This item is a Hawaiian stamp printed by the American Bank Note Company of New York and issued in 1893, listed as Scott #60. It is mint, very lightly hinged.

The history of the stamp is as follows:
Following the American overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom on 17 January 1893, a "Provisional Government" was set up, which decided to overprint all the existing stamps with the words "Provisional / GOVT. / 1893" across the bottom 1/3 of the stamp to show the change of government. Scott #60 was created from a quantity of Scott #33 and #33a that were on hand for sale to the philatelic market. By 1893, the 6-cent value was largely obsolete (see below), although it could have paid certain unusual rates such as the basic letter rate to countries NOT members of the UPU, triple weight domestic letters, and certain domestic third-class mail rates.

The underlying stamp shows His Majesty, King Kamehameha V, the last member of the Kamehameha dynasty. This 6-cent stamp was widely used as it paid the basic letter rate between Hawai`i and the United States between 1871 and 1882, after which it was largely obsolete as the rate it was issued to pay no longer existed.

Paypal, Money Orders, and Checks payable in the US are accepted. Credit cards accepted through paypal only. Checks must be drawn on a US bank, or I cannot cash them! (I can no longer accept Canadian Postal Money Orders, even those in US dollars-sorry!)
